IMMIGRATION REFORM
Teaching students to influence issues affecting their community
Thousands of immigrants, both legal and undocumented, come to the United States each year. Some argue that these immigrants are vital to the U.S. economy for they perform jobs that few Americans are willing to take. President Trump and other critics disagree saying that today's immigrants place a strain on government resources, drive down wages for skilled and unskilled jobs, and threaten our national security. Some believe that today's immigrants are less likely to assimilate than previous immigrants and will change the face of America as we know it.

Tensions over immigration reached fever-pitch in communities throughout the U.S. in November 2015 when 31 governors publicly opposed letting Syrian refugees into their states following the terrorist attacks in Paris. At the federal level, Texas Senator Ted Cruz introduced legislation that would halt refugees coming to the U.S. from Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and Iraq. In 2017, President Trump went further calling for a travel ban from seven predominantly Muslim nations and cutting America's refugee resettlement program in half. As the debate rages on, immigrants continue to make their way to the United States.

This unit will afford you the opportunity to discover where today's immigrants to America are coming from, what is motivating them to leave their homeland, and what obstacles they face upon arrival. Along the way you will analyze proposed immigration reforms from a variety of perspectives and identify strategies that can be implemented to address immigration concerns in our country and in our community.
