Why not spend your senior year making a difference in your community?
Since 2004, nearly 800 PSL students have discovered that sometimes the most meaningful lessons occur outside of the classroom. By engaging with their communities through service, PSL students make real-life connections between their education and the real-world issues affecting the people they serve. In the process of learning about others, students inevitably learn more about themselves and are inspired to work for justice in their town, state, and country. You possess the knowledge and skills to improve your community, why not take a class that encourages you to use them?
Course description: Perry Service Learning (PSL) is a 12th grade elective that combines social studies and English curricula with volunteer service to promote social involvement and responsible citizenship. The course will be two semesters in length and students will receive 3 credits (Social Studies, English 12, and Service Learning).
Service requirements: Students in the PSL program volunteer 2-4 hours per week for an approved service agency, community organization, or government office. These service experiences make the social and community issues discussed in class come alive for students. Beginning in mid-September, students are released from class on Tuesday and Thursday to complete their volunteer hours. Students are permitted to complete their hours outside of the traditional school day (evenings/weekends) if they prefer. For a complete list of volunteer opportunities click here. Please note that several volunteer opportunities exist on the campus of the Perry Educational Village. However, students would be responsible for providing their own transportation if they elect to volunteer off campus.
Classroom expectations: The course begins with a unit on philanthropy to introduce students to the assets that exist to meet unmet human needs in Northeast Ohio. Once students have selected their volunteer placments (usually by mid-September), the class meets face-to-face on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to discuss topics they will encounter at their service sites. These topics include: poverty, education reform, immigration, topics in special education, and environmental issues.
How do I sign up? Registation begins at the start of the second semester and concludes by mid-February. Current juniors are encouraged to consider registering for PSL. If you have any questions don't hesitate to see Mr. Soeder or Mrs. Trentanelli in the PSL Center for Civic Engagment (Manchester West) or contact your guidance counselor.
