Lesson Four:  Immigration Reform Topics and Precis

Picture
The immigration reform measures under consideration in Congress encompass a wide range of issues and topics.  Read the opposing viewpoint article for the topic assigned to you, write a precis, and be prepared to present the information you learned to your classmates.  The information you learn from the article presentations will be the basis for a letter you write to an elected official in which you articulate your position on immigration reform.
Click here to see which article is assigned to you.

Lesson Objectives
  • Identify the political, economic, and cultural causes of oppression against minority groups (i.e. immigrants) and analyze how beliefs about civil and human rights vary among social, economic, and political groups.
  • Read and comprehend complex informational texts.
  • Write informative/explanatory texts.
  • Analyze issues through the critical use of credible sources.

Activity One:  Precis Assignment (Formative Assessment)

Directions:  After closely reading your assigned article on Immigration Reform, write a précis that summarizes and responds to the text.
  1.  Provide FBI (Full Bibliographic Information) for the article in MLA form.  This is the type of entry that you would put onto the Works Cited page of a research paper.
  2. Write a summary of the article.  The summary should be no more than fifteen lines typed.  Focus on the big picture that is presented.
Write a response to the article.  Make a claim that can be argued.  Support your claim logically.  Feel free to cite correctly from the article as well as from other sources of information and conjecture to help support your position.  Your response should be no more than one page long.  Be precise.

Activity Two - Classroom Presentation (Summative Assessment)

You will present an overview (see details below) of your assigned article.  You should also be familiar with the other article in your assigned topic. In addition to understanding and presenting your own assigned article, you will be listening to and asking questions on the topics presented by your classmates.  Since there are more than ten articles representing different viewpoints, you will need to listen carefully to others’ presentations so that you can choose which topic you will use to write your letter to an elected official.

On Wednesday, March 6th, you will make a five to ten minute oral presentation, supported by Google Slides, summarizing the arguments in your article and analyzing the cause(s) of oppression against immigrants or refugees.

A Google Slide Show and supporting presentation that is PROFICIENT will meet the following learning targets

Power Objective #6 Initiate and participate effectively in a range of discussions by
 - including the title and author(s) of the article, as well as the publication name and date
 - including a thorough definition of the reform topic
- coming to the discussion prepared, and drawing on that preparation with evidence/research
- making strategic use of digital media in presentations to enhance the understanding of findings, evidence, etc.

Power Objective #14 Analyze issues through the critical use of credible sources by
 - including a detailed summary of the author's primary argument(s) and a photo that conveys the author's main idea(s)
 - including an analysis of the reform topic that:
  • defining how immigrants or refugees are oppressed
  • identifying the cause(s) of this oppression
  • recognizing multiple points of view on this topic and analyzing how beliefs about the rights of immigrants or refugees vary among different groups
