Eliminating Hunger in our Community

PSL is partnering with Project Hope for the Homeless and Forbes House to provide meals for families staying at the shelter.  To help make sure every belly is full each night, especially the smallest of them we are seeking volunteers to donate and prepare 15-20 meals every Tuesday during the school year. Volunteers arrive at the PSL kitchen immediately after school to prepare the meal and deliver it to the shelters by 5 p.m.

During the 2020-21 school year, PSL volunteers prepared 30 meals and fed over 600 guests at local shelters.

The PSL Kitchen is located in the Perry Service Learning Center for Civic Engagement at 4261 Manchester Road, Perry Ohio.

In addition to preparing meals for Project Hope, the kitchen may be utilized by classes, clubs, or other groups interested in conducting a service project that involves food preparation.

Examples of previous service projects include preparing sack lunches for the homeless at the Salvation Army or Project Hope, baking cookies for senior citizens in our community, and making meals for students involved in service activities on campus.

Sustainable Development Goal #2:  No Hunger

The Perry Service Learning program is committed to sponsoring service learning opportunities that are aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The SDGs are a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.  Moreover, they allow participants to understand how the need they are addressing locally, affects people globally.  The work of the PSL Kitchen is directly tied to SDG #2: Zero Hunger.  Specifically, the PSL Kitchen focuses on ensruing access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year round.
