Service times: TBD Hours required: 2 hours per week Agency description: The PHS Giving Garden is a small, student-run garden dedicated to sustainable agricultural methods. The garden provides a wide variety of annual vegetables to the Perry Center. The garden also provides educational opportunities in sustainable ariculture and related topics for student K-12 as well as other community organizations. The Holiday Food Drive is a PSL student initiative that raises much needed donations of cash and nonperishables for the Perry Center each year. Job description: Volunteers will weed, water, and harvest the fall crop and deliver goods to the Perry Center. Volunteers will also be responsible for maintaining and hopefully selling bouquets from the perennial flower beds. Prior to winter, a considerable amount of work will need to be done to prep the beds so that they are ready to plant in the spring. Over the winter, volunteers will oversee the implementation of the Holiday Food Drive. Volunteers will also be expected to secure donations and write grants to sustain the garden. In the Spring, volunteers will plan and manage the garden operation with considerable emphasis being placed on recruiting underclassman to get involved and eventually be in a position to take over the garden operations. Volunteers will also be expected to plan several events capable of keeping 10 of their classmates busy for an hour in the garden. |
