Lesson 10: Who will you choose? For the third straight year, students in the Perry Service Learning (PSL) program partnered with Magnified Giving to nominate deserving non-profits in Northeast Ohio to receive $2,000 in grant money. This innovative program teaches students to become the philanthropists of tomorrow while meeting society's needs today. Students began by researching 104 non-profits. 6 were invited to complete grant applications. Next, students reviewed the applications, conducted site visits, and engaged in thoughtful discussions to narrow the list down to three deserving organizations. The finalists are profiled below.
The public is invited to review each organization's video and information and cast a vote at the bottom of this page. While PSL students will determine the 1st place $1,000 grant winner, the results of the public vote will determine the 2nd place ($600 grant) and 3rd place ($400 grant) winners. |

Finalist #1: BirthrightNominated by Christina Patrizi
|
Mission: "Birthright Lake, Inc. offers free, non-judgmental, confidential help and support to pregnant women and their families who are struggling due to personal and/or financial difficulties. We are dedicated to helping through tangible, positive and loving support. We support our families with children's clothing (size Newborn to 5), diapers, formula, maternity clothing and various other material aids." Plans for the grant: "This money would be spent purchasing formula for babies. The formula companies, each year, increase the cost but lower the number of ounces per canister. Over the last few years the cost of formula has dramatically increased - even the general public is having a difficult time affording formula." |
Finalist #2: Ronald McDonald HouseMission: "The Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland (RMH) supports families whose children receive treatment at area medical centers by providing a home-like environment and essential resources and services."
Plans for the grant: "Last year, almost 50% of the families who stayed at Ronald McDonald House could not afford the requested $20 nightly room donation, resulting in over $155,000 in uncollected revenue. Ronald McDonald House will never turn a family away due to inability to pay. Through the Share-A-Night program donors can contribute to a fund to help pay for those who cannot afford the $20 nightly donation. This grant would be used for the Share-A-Night fund." |

Finalist #3: PAWSNominated by Evan Dimmick
|
Mission: "PAWS is a group dedicated to the rescue of pets in Northeast Ohio. Our philosophy is that kindness to animals helps build a better world for all of us. Through the generosity of other caring individuals, we can ensure that animals who come into the care of PAWS will never again be alone, hungry, sick, afraid, or in pain." Plans for the grant: "We would spend the grant on spay/neuter expenses, and various other testing such as, but not limited to; heart worm test, parvo test, blood tests, x-rays, etc." |
