DOCUMERICA Northeast Ohio Edition
Since 2014, students in the Perry Service Learning (PSL) program have set out each Spring to capture photographs showing the state of the environment, both positive and negative, in Northeast Ohio. All photos were judged by Mr. Jeffrey Goodman, a PHS social studies teacher and award winning photographer. The slideshows below represent the top student entries.
This project was inspired by a similar venture undertaken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shortly after its founding. Between 1972 and 1977, the EPA initiated a federal photography project known as DOCUMERICA to capture images of the environmental crisis in the United States. While some photographers focused on various forms of pollution, others tried to capture solutions proposed by the EPA, and a few attempted to depict the human condition in hopes of inspiring viewers to political or environmental activism. The photos submitted by students in the PSL program encompassed a wide range of environmental issues including beaches, business and industry, forests, clean water, garbage, pollution, and sustainable mobility.
