Agency Description: Crossroads Hospice offers hospice and palliative care services to patients and families dealing with end of life issues.
Volunteer Duties: Before becoming a Crossroads Hospice volunteer, you will receive specialized training conducted by our team members. This training ensures our volunteers have an immediate connection to the program and feel at home in the Crossroads Hospice Community. Volunteers are required to complete an application, provide information about your health, be at least 16 years of age, and wait a minimum of one year after the death of an immediate family member of loved one.
The Crossroads Volunteer Department has requests for volunteers to sing and play music for patients, to use their gifts of art through painting, crafting, and drawing. We have other requests to just watch television together, talk or read, play cards, puzzles. Most importantly, our volunteer’s brighten our patient’s days. Also, Crossroads is looking for students with creative writing skills, and a desire to participate in our Life Journal program. Crossroads offers patients the opportunity to complete a journal that they can give as a gift to their families. Volunteers visit with the patient and interview them, asking questions about their family heritage, history, and wisdom learned throughout their life. The volunteer and patient select photos, newspaper articles and announcements that will be included in the journal. The volunteer writes the journal, uploads the photos, and designs the book. Crossroads has the book printed and bound for the volunteer to give to the patient.
Potential volunteers:
· -are matched with patients with similar interests in nursing facilities close to where they live;
· -visit patients while they are on routine care
· -provide companionship only (no volunteers provide physical / personal care)
· -will be introduced to patients by our staff until volunteer feels comfortable with patient
PLEASE NOTE: UNTIL A VACCINE IS WIDELY AVAILABLE, VOLUNTEERS WILL NOT HAVE ANY CONTACT WITH PATIENTS. INSTEAD, THEIR VOLUNTEER WORK WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE CROSSROADS OFFICE. THERE, VOLUNTEERS WILL LEARN THE INNER WORKINGS OF HOSPICE AND HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHADOW MEMBERS OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM.
