Homework: Writing a smart S.M.A.R.T. Goal for the 3rd Quarter
Happy New Year! You are on the back 9 of your senior year. With a modicum of effort these could be the happiest days of your distinguished high school career. However, giving into the temptation to fall into a senior slump could result in relentless badgering from your teachers, guidance counselors, assistant principal, principal, and parents that will turn senior year into a nightmare. Avoid this sad fate.
In the immortal words of Michael Scott, "You should never settle for who you are." With that in mind the 3rd quarter S.M.A.R.T. goal assignment now presents itself. |
THE ASSIGNMENT
1. Write a goal for the 3rd quarter that is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. It is also imperative that your goal moves you into a place on Hart's ladder that demonstrates initiative and leadership on your part.
2. Email your goal to your supervisor and copy Mr. Soeder and Mrs. Trentanelli on the email.
WHY SHOULD I DO THIS?
1. During the first semester, showing up and completing your required hours resulted in a proficient score for power objective #20 (Engage in activities that meet community needs). During the third quarter, we've upped the ante. Simply showing up and completing your hours will result in a dreaded "IP." In order to reach the coveted "P" you must initiate a project that positively impacts the people that you serve.
2. This assignment will also be scored as a summative assessment for the following objectives:

- #7 Demonstrate command of conventions of standard English when writing
- #19 Develop a vision for success in your volunteer placement
CAN I SEE A SMART GOAL EXAMPLE FOR A CLASSROOM SETTING?
By the end of the 3rd quarter, I will reach level 6 on Hart's ladder by designing and teaching a lesson on a topic that is mutually agreed upon by my supervising teacher and myself. I will meet with my supervisor to determine a date, plan appropriate activities, gather needed materials/supplies, implement the lesson, and report on results. I will document the planning, implementation, and results of these activities on my InnerView time sheets.
CAN I SEE A SMART GOAL EXAMPLE FOR A HEALTH CARE SETTING?
By the end of the 3rd quarter, I will reach level 7 on Hart's ladder by creating a peer-to-peer counseling program for students who want someone to talk to about mental health problems. I will research similar programs at other schools, determine best practices, and meet with my PSL teachers and guidance counselors to get it started. I will document the planning, implementation, and results of these activities on my InnerView time sheets each week.
CAN I SEE A SMART GOAL EXAMPLE FOR A RECREATION SETTING?
By the end of the 3rd quarter, I will reach level 7 on Hart's ladder by securing donations of 20 baseball gloves and 20 pairs of baseball/softball shoes for Perry recreation participants from low income families. I will accomplish this by working with the Recreation Director to host a skills clinic and accept donations of gloves, shoes, or money to assist families in need. I will document the planning, implementation, and results of these activities on my InnerView time sheets.
CAN I SEE A SMART GOAL EXAMPLE FOR A SOCIAL SERVICE SETTING?
By the end of the 3rd quarter, I will reach level 7 on Hart's ladder by starting a hygiene closet at the middle school. I will meet with Mrs. Roberts to discuss feasibility, secure donations of 100 items from middle school students, and set-up closet at a location to be determined at Perry Middle School. I will document the planing, implementation, and results of these activities on my InnerView time sheets.
MY BRAIN HURTS. CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EMAIL TEMPLATE THAT I CAN MODIFY FOR MY SUPERVISOR?
Ask and you shall receive:
Dear Mr./Mrs. SupervisorLastName,
I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to volunteer at InsertNameOfVolunteerLocationHere during the first semester. I look forward to continuing to serve you during the second semester and am hoping to undertake a project that will show initiative and demonstrate my ability to positively impact others.
With that in mind, I developed the S.M.A.R.T. goal below and wanted to share it with you in hopes that you could provide me with some feedback:
INSERT SMART GOAL HERE
I welcome your input. Please let me know if there is anything you think I should change either by responding to this email or just talking with me about it the next time that I volunteer. I am also copying my PSL teachers on this email to keep them in the loop and in hopes that they might be able to observe me when I implement this project.
Thanks again for any help you can provide.
Sincerely,
