Monday, February 2  
Share upcoming opportunities, including small group field trip to Magnified Giving finalists.  2026 Magnified Giving Bracket update. Read “Justice is Beyond Charity: A Parable.”  Notes on justice, charity, and evaluating nonprofits.  View "The way we think about charity is dead wrong" and answer comprehension questions. Review for Philanthropy Exam.  ​

Conference calls with nonprofits that reached the semi-final round in the Magnified Giving grant competition.  Review philanthropy unit exam results and/or conference with Soeder/Trent regarding SMART goals.

Week Twenty One 

Monday, January 19 - No School.  Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Wednesday, January 21 - ADVISORY BOARD MEETING AT 7pm
Review nonprofit nomination presentation guidelines and exemplar.  Make a copy of this template, complete slides 1-7, and share your presentation with [email protected] before the end of the block. For help completing your slides, please use this resource. Homework: Be prepared to present your nonprofit slides to a small group of peers on Friday, January 23rd.  Students who are absent on Friday, January 23rd and do not make arrangements to share their slides with their group will receive a 0 for this assignment.  

​Friday, January 23
Submit InnerView time sheet by 3:00pm with progress report on SMART goal.  Review committee presentation expectations. (Each student should give a 5-10 minute presentation in which they share their nomination form as well as a brief video about their organization or the issue that it addresses.  When you are not presenting, you should record the name of each student in your group, the nonprofit they nominated, and details about each organization that impressed you in your notebook).  Reconvene and complete ballots individually.

Week Twenty

Monday, January 12th
Celebrate second quarter awards for service hours, recycling, Midterm Reflection and more. Send 10 emails for PSL annual fund campaign.  Students awarded a TLC grant will briefly conference with Mrs. Trentanelli.  Use remaining class time to reply to SMART goal emails if necessary. 

Annual Fund Steps
1. Register HERE.  Sign up using your school email address.  SKIP phone number.  Personalize your page by adding: your name, PSL-related photo, and your bio. 
2. Add emails.  You can copy/paste or add individually.   Personalize the name associated with each email as appropriate.

Wednesday, January 14
Introduce philanthropy unit.  Share story of Bob’s Bugatti and take notes on philanthropists, The Giving Pledge, and Magnified Giving.  Assessment:  Read Jeff Green's Giving Pledge letter and answer comprehension questions.  Then identify three non-profits whose mission resonates with you and explain why the work they do is important to you.

Friday, January 16
Submit InnerView time sheet by 3:00pm with progress report on SMART goal. Share Annual Fund update.  Review nonprofit nomination presentation guidelines and exemplar.  Make a copy of this template and complete the title slide, mission statement slide, and promotional video slide before the end of class today.  Share your presentation with [email protected] before you leave. For help identifying a nonprofit to nominate, please use this resource. 

Week Nineteen

Monday, January 5th - Sew For Service

Wednesday, January 7th
Review 3rd qtr. InnerView reflection rubric, S.M.A.R.T. goal rubric, and TLC Grant application.  

TRADITIONAL PSL
1. Make a copy of this slide presentation.
2. Review the exemplar found on slide 2.
3. Create your own slide using the template on slide 3.
4. Copy your S.M.A.R.T. goal and insert on slide 3 after making suggested revisions. 
5. Share completed slide with Mr. Soeder and Mrs. Trentanelli.
6. Email your supervisor with your SMART goal (see template), and CC Mr. Soeder and Mrs. Trentanelli on the message.
7. Complete TLC Grant Application if you need funds to complete your S.M.A.R.T. goal.

HONORS PSL: 
1.  Make needed revisions to your S.M.A.R.T. goal.
2. Email SMART goal to adult mentor overseeing your project (see template), and CC Soeder and Trent on the message.
3. Review S.M.A.R.T. Goal poster exemplars (Exemplar 1, Exemplar 2, Exemplar 3, Exemplar 4, Exemplar 5).
4. Create your own poster by copying one of the exemplar templates or creating your own from scratch using Canva or Google Slides (Note: When creating your own Google Slide from scratch, go to File, Page Setup, Custom, and make the dimensions 11.69" by 16.54")
5.  Your poster must include your name, name and mission statement of the organization your project serves, S.M.A.R.T. goal, reflection that quantifies your impact, at least 2 photos, and personal touches that make this uniquely your own. Share progress with [email protected] before you leave today.
6. Complete TLC Grant Application if you need funds to complete your S.M.A.R.T. goal.​​​

Friday, January 9th 
Review updated InnerView reflection rubric and complete time sheet with SMART goal for week ending January 10th. Preview Annual Fund campaign for Monday including incentive opportunities.
​Review and revise S.M.A.R.T. goal elements (poster/bulletin board sign, email, etc) and conference with Soeder and Trent.

Week Seventeen and Week Eighteen 

Monday, December 8th 
Share PSL Impact Award program from 2025. Introduce Midterm Question #4 (Biography) and complete in class today.

Wednesday, December 10th - SPECIAL SCHEDULE
As part of Midterm Question #5, read Adam Davis' article "What We Don't Talk About When We Don't Talk About Service" and participate in classroom activity.

Friday, December 12th - SPECIAL SCHEDULE 
Turn in time sheets by 3pm today. Wrap up Holiday Food Drive by collecting donations, sorting donations, and delivering donations to the Perry Center.

Monday, December 15th 
Celebrate our Holiday Food Drive successes with the annual PSL Ping Pong Tournament!

Tuesday, December 16th - Thursday, December 19th
We will NOT meet as a class.  Students should sign up for a Midterm Conference time (see Infinite Campus and ParentSquare message that was sent on 12/12 at 7am for SignUp Genius).

Week Sixteen

Monday, December 1st
1. Introduce Midterm Conferences and review the conference schedule (sign ups available next week). Review Midterm Conference Question #1:  “Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, ‘A person’s mind, once stretched to a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.’ Reflect on how your PSL experiences have stretched your thinking or understanding this semester. Describe a specific guest speaker, field trip, or volunteer experience that connected to a lesson, concept, or activity from PSL class. How did this real-world experience deepen or expand your understanding of that classroom topic, and in what ways has your thinking changed as a result?”
2. Heroine wrap-up.  

Wednesday, December 3rd
Introduce Hart's Ladder of Youth Participation, and develop a 3rd quarter PACE Leadership Project (aka S.M.A.R.T. goal project)  as explained in Midterm Conference Question #2.

​Friday, December 5th
1. The Holiday Food Drive begins today!  Review goals, expectations, and schedule.
2. Watch Chimamanda Adichie's TED Talk "The Danger of a Single Story" and develop response to midterm conference question #3 in PSL notebook.

Week Fourteen

Monday, November 17th
Introduce Addiction and Recovery Performance Summative.  
Introduce the Holiday Food Drive.

Blocks 2 and 4:  Watch the Netflix documentary Heroin(e) and complete viewing guide. 
Block 3: Travel to Perry Senior Center to host their annual Thanksgiving Feast from 11:15am to 12:55pm
Homework:  Read though page 319 prior to class on Friday. 


Friday, November 21st 
Discuss Heroine and take reading quiz.  Write thank you notes to classroom speakers.

Monday, October 27th
​1. 1st Quarter 
Reflection and Celebration Day!
2. Assign topics for “Finding Common Ground in a Divided World” assignment.  Each group member should find 1 left leaning and 1 right learning article about your topic.  For each article, complete a handwritten precis in your notebook that include: an FBI (full bibliographic information) as if you were citing the work in a research paper, a summary of the article in your own words that is no more than 15 lines, and a response to the article which includes a claim that can be argued, and is supported with logic/references. 

Wednesday, October 29th
Begin working on slide presentation for “Finding Common Ground in a Divided World” assignment:
  • Slide presentation overview: 6-8 minute talk with issue summary connected to Global Goal; group’s position and proposed solution; acknowledgement of opposing views; stats or real-world examples supporting your views; where you think you can find common ground; citation/reference page.
  • Complete steps 1 and 2 of slide presentation check list.

Friday, October 31st
Finish working on slide presentation for “Finding Common Ground in a Divided World” assignment:
  • Completed time sheet in InnerView.
  • Show precis to Trent (last chance).
  • Show Soeder completed slides 1-6 (last chance). 
  • Rehearse 6-8 minute presentation with your group if time remains.

Monday, November 3rd
Classroom forum for “Finding Common Ground in a Divided World” assignment.
Presenters: Share your 6-8 minute presentation in small groups. 
Audience:  Complete classroom forum guide.  Earn bonus points for each question asked.


Week Ten 

Monday, October 20th:
Exam review. Violence against the homeless. What would you do? (Notes, NPR radio broadcast, Reading Guide for Violence and Hate Crimes Against Unhoused Americans: 2020-2022).  ).   Homework: Get notes in order for exam on Wednesday.  Glass Castle assignment due Wednesday.

Wednesday, October 22nd:
Take exam on poverty and homelessness.  Turn in One Pager and copy of ​The Glass Castle. 

Friday, October 24th:

Time sheets due today.  ​Introduce “Finding Common Ground In A Divided World.” Preview topics and select 3 that interest your group. For each topic you selected, find one AP or Reuters article and write a handwritten summary in your notebook that includes the article title, date, and a 5-10 bullets summarizing main points.

Week Nine

Monday, October 13th: 
Review The Glass Castle.  Introduce the One Pager assessment.  Prepare 3 questions for speakers from Extended Housing in your PSL notebook.   


Wednesday, October 15th: 
Participate in conversation on homelessness with guests from Extended Housing, Inc. Use any remaining class time to work on One Pager assessment.

Friday, October: 17th: 
End of 1st quarter grading period.  Turn in time sheets by 3pm today.
Block 2: Tour Karpos.
Block 3: Tour SubZero Mission.
Block 4: Tour Project Hope for the Homeless. 

Important Deadlines:  The poverty and homelessness exam and one pager assessment are due on Wednesday, 10/22. 

Week Eight

Watch God Bless the Child and complete viewing guide.

Week Seven

Monday, September 29th 
Continue reading and discussing The Glass Castle.  Complete an empathy chart in your PSL notebook, and share exit slip with Mrs. Trentanelli and/or Mr. Soeder before you leave class today.

Wednesday, October 1st
Chicago Urban Plunge overview and sign-up instructions.  Review chronic v. episodic homelessness and causes of poverty.  Read "Million Dollar Murray" and take notes on “Solving Chronic Homelessness.”  If time remains, read Glass Castle.  Homework:  Read The Glass Castle through page 163 on Friday.  Dress for pumpkin picking on Friday.

​Friday, October 3rd
Discuss The Glass Castle, and take a reading check quiz on pages 81-163. Participate in Pumpkin Harvest to raise funds for PSL. Homework:  Time sheet due at 3pm today.  Sign up for Chicago Urban Plunge on InnerView by 3pm today if interested.

Reminder:  Any student who has NOT accepted a volunteer position and/or will not earn at least two hours of service this week must report to class during their scheduled PSL block on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students who will be volunteering with their PSL partner agency for at least two hours before Friday at 3pm do NOT need to be in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Monday, September 22nd
Introduce The Glass Castle and begin reading the memoir. 
Homework:  Read through page 80 of The Glass Castle

Wednesday, September 17th: Take open note exam on Service Learning 101.  If you use your notebook, you will be required to leave it in the PSL Classroom as the conclusion of your exam.

Friday, September 19th:  ​Turn in InnerView time sheets by 3pm today. Participate in pumpkin harvest to benefit PSL Annual Fund. ​

Week Four

Monday, Sept. 8: 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Activities Commence:
Block 1: SADD members hosting pancake breakfast for veterans at the Perry Park pavilion.
Block 2:  Meet at PSL for attendance.  Volunteer at Lake Erie Bluffs beach clean-up.
Block 3:  Meet at PSL for attendance.  Volunteer with American Legion at Perry Cemetery.
Block 4: Meet in Giving Garden (back hallway of PHS near Mr. Bezzeg's room).  Volunteer at Giving Garden for potato harvest or PSL Center for Civic Engagement for recycling.

Tuesday, Sept. 9: Any student who has NOT accepted a volunteer position must report to class during their scheduled PSL block today. Students who will be volunteering with their PSL partner agency for at least two hours before Friday at 3pm do NOT need to be in class today.  

Wednesday, Sept. 10:  Participate in conversations on the PSL Survival Guide and confidentiality.  PHS Guidance Department visits PSL to introduce SCOIR, review Common App, and explain resources available to transition to college, career, or military after high school. INTRODUCTORY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING TONIGHT at 7PM.

Friday,  Sept. 12:  Review highlights from PSL Advisory Board Meeting.  Take notes on PSL Survival Guide. Share highs and lows from first week of volunteering.  Review exemplar timesheet reflections,  introduce time sheet rubric, and score sample time sheet reflections.  Review InnerView honors and awards. Create an InnerView account today in order to track volunteer hours this year.  Add reflections to InnerView for Fall Festival, 9/11 Day of Service (beach, cemetery, garden), and service hours completed at your agency this week.   Homework: Continue to monitor email and reply promptly to PSL partner agencies.  Homework:  Prepare for exam on Wednesday, Sept. 17th.

Week Three

Monday, September 1st - LABOR DAY - NO SCHOOL.

Tuesday, September 2nd - Introduce PSL Student Advisory Board and extend invite to first meeting one week from tomorrow.  Highlight PES volunteer opportunities.  Review interview locations in MW.  Complete Interview Day prep in notebook capturing the mission/purpose of the organizations you are interviewing with, facts about the person interviewing you, and preparing three follow up questions for each interview session.  
Homework: Prepare for tomorrow's interviews!   Make sure to have at least 5 copies of your resume printed prior to the start of class. 

Wednesday, September 3rd - Interview Day!  Make sure you are dressed to impress, and that you have at least 5 copies of your resume printed prior to the start of class.  

Thursday, September 4th - Reflect on yesterday's Interview Day.  Conference individually with PSL teachers to discuss where you will fulfill your volunteer requirements this year. Email the organizations that you interviewed using professional communication guidelines.
Homework: Complete confidentiality discussion guide.


Friday, September 5th - Pass out PSL shirts.  Watch Boatlift, discuss the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, and the highlight the power of community.  Review Fall Festival details for Saturday, and preview Monday’s Day of Service.  Complete senior check in, and conference with Mrs. Trentanelli as needed.
Special note: Tom Anderson (American Legion) will be visiting Block 3 to review Monday's service project. ​

Week Two

Monday, August 25th - Evaluate sample resumes using rubric.  Finish resume, participate in peer review, activity, and complete self evaluation checklist as directed. Submit resume by the end of the block.   Conference individually with Mr. Soeder or Mrs. Trentanelli as needed. ​

Tuesday, August 26th - Review list of organizations that will be interviewing students, research each organization on the PSL partner agency page, select your top 5, and be prepared to share your list by tomorrow.  

​Wednesday, August 27th - Introduce the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and participate in a learning station rotation.

Thursday, August 28th - Review resumes and discuss revision opportunities.  Participate in conversations on empathy.

Traditional PSL Homework:  Watch the short movie Indifferent and think about the role empathy plays in the story. Where do you see empathy missing, and what are the consequences? How might the film’s message connect to your own responsibility in showing empathy to others? 
Honors PSL Homework:  Read THIS article that critiques empathy as a guiding principle. Based on the author’s argument, do you think empathy should be considered a strength, a weakness, or something in between when it comes to decision-making and social action? Use one idea or example from the article to support your response.  

Resume Grade Revision Steps
1. Revise resume using feedback from Mr. Soeder and Mrs. Trentanelli.
2.Email Mr. Soeder and Mrs. Trentanelli, summarizing the revisions the revisions you made and requesting a grade update.
3. Submit email on/before Thursday, September 4th for grade revision.

Monday, August 18th  

Welcome to PSL.  Watch highlights from the PSL class of 2025.  Review syllabus.  Details: Bring notebook, folder, and pen/pencil to class every day!

Tuesday, August 19th 
Notes on "What is Service Learning?"  Pass out required forms. Introduce 9/11 Day of Service and sign up for the Fall Festival. Play PSL Center for Civic Engagement and Manchester West B-I-N-G-O.  Homework:  Required forms (liability waiver, transportation waiver, book form) and Annual Update and all forms due Friday, August 22nd.  

Wednesday, August 20th 
Honors PSL:  Complete summer reading assessment.  Read and discuss Marge Piercy's poem "To Be of Use," and complete writing assignment. Traditional PSL: Read “Service-Learning: A Balanced Approach to Experiential Education” by Andrew Furco, take active reading notes, and complete 5-3-1 graphic organizer.
Homework:  All PSL forms (transportation waiver, liability waiver, and book form) due on Friday, August 26th.  Bring notebook to class every day.
Thursday, August 21st -  Participate in the See Yourself assessment with Dr. Jessie Baginski from Fleur de Lead to determine personal strengths. 

Friday, August 22nd -  Review resume assignment slide presentation, rubric, and exemplar.  Begin working on a resume in class. Homework:  Share your resume with [email protected] and [email protected] by the end of your PSL class on Monday, August 25th.  Note...your completed resume represents a summative exam grade for the quarter.
