Positions available: 5+
Service times: Thursdays, 3:30-5:00 p.m. (plus outside preparation time) at Perry Elementary School. Note...this is a part-time placement. You would need serve with another organization to get your second hour. Service requirement: 2 hours per week Agency description: Formerly known as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Torchlight was established in Perry to provide 3rd and 4th graders with one-on-one time and attention in their school, typically once a week during the academic year. Teachers identify children who can benefit most from interaction with a caring mentor. As their friendships evolve, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. Positive relationships between the mentors and the students have a direct, measurable, and lasting impact on children’s lives. Job description: The Perry after school Torchlight program has volunteer opportunities for students interested in planning and implementing activities for elementary age children. Torchlight is trying to adapt their after school mentoring programs to virtual. High school volunteers are expected to commit to one hour a week, every Wednesday from 4:30 – 5:30 starting mid October. It will be a mix of group mentoring and one on one relationship building, with it rotating each week. So say the first week we would have a group mentoring program that Wednesday from 4:30 – 5:30 through Zoom or a similar platform. We would hold weekly sessions for the first month so that the kids and volunteers can get to know one another. Then once we have matched them (hopefully one high school volunteer to one elementary student) after about a month we would start rotating each week, so one week would be a group session, the following week we would ask them to communicate on their own at least once during the week (either zoom, email, texting,) then the following week group session on Wednesday at 4:30 and keep alternating. Our group sessions would have activities and games. And as always, if there is not school (winter break, thanksgiving) there is not a session. This is also a work in progress so things may change slightly based on how it is going. We did do some virtual mentoring for our after school program in Wickliffe last year and it went well. Application process: In addition to sharing their resume/video introduction, interested candidates must also complete an application at www.torchlightyma.org PLEASE NOTE: UNTIL A VACCINE BECOMES AVAILABLE, TORCHLIGHT VOLUNTEERS WILL WORK REMOTELY TO MENTOR STUDENTS IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT. If face-t0-face sessions resume...volunteers will mentor their Little one day per week from 3:15-5:15 p.m. Mentoring duties involve one-on-one tutoring, working on crafts/coloring/games, and developing/implementing games that can be played during gym time. At the conclusion of each weekly session, students will help sign-out students with parents when they are picked up. |
