Agency description: Formerly known as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Torchlight was established in Perry to provide 3rd and 4th graders with one-on-one time and attention in their school, typically once a week during the academic year. Teachers identify children who can benefit most from interaction with a caring mentor. As their friendships evolve, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. Positive relationships between the mentors and the students have a direct, measurable, and lasting impact on children’s lives.
Job description: The Perry after school Torchlight program has volunteer opportunities for students interested in planning and implementing activities for elementary age children. Volunteers will mentor their Little one day per week from 3:15-5:15 p.m. Mentoring duties involve one-on-one tutoring, working on crafts/coloring/games, and developing/implementing games that can be played during gym time. At the conclusion of each weekly session, students will help sign-out students with parents when they are picked up.
