Art and Social Reform...The Power of Graphic Novels to Raise Awareness about Social Issues
In recent years, graphic novels and comic books have been used to raise awareness about issues ranging from civil rights to immigration.
In 2019, The Sub Zero Mission, a Painesville nonprofit serving homeless veterans, launched a new awareness campaign featuring a graphic novel. The novel seeks to raise awareness about the plight of homeless veterans in our country. According to Sub Zero CEO Al Raddatz, the graphic novel is a way to help spread the word of the nonprofit's mission to a new audience. |

“We have many young people who help in so many ways, This was a unique way to connect with the next generation of donors and adult volunteers. Yes, this will be used to raise funds, but we also see several being used as thank you gifts to some of our younger donors,” - Raddatz
Through the Magnified Giving program and Shantytown, PSL students have donated over $2,500 to The Sub Zero Mission since 2013. As a thank you, Mr. Raddatz has provided the PSL class of 2019 with a complimentary classroom set of issue #1 of the Blue Coat Missionary. In return, the Sub Zero Mission is seeking honest feedback from PSL students about the graphic novel.
