Monitoring Progress Toward Personal S.M.A.R.T. Goal
After you submit your timesheet in InnerView, go to the back of your PSL notebook and record a reflection that aligns to the personal S.M.A.R.T. goal you articulated on your infographic assignment. Your reflection should be written in complete sentences and thoroughly explain the progress you made towards your goal each week. These guidelines will help you stay on track:

2nd Quarter S.M.A.R.T. Goals (Select One)
In 1997, sociologist Roger Hart wrote a book titled Children's Participation: The Theory And Practice Of Involving Young Citizens In Community Development And Environmental Care for UNICEF. The book included a "Hart's Ladder of Youth Participation," that can be used to measure youth involvement and initiative in service projects. Use this tool to track your progress during the 2nd quarter.
STEP ONE: WRITE THIS GOAL IN THE BACK OF YOUR PSL NOTEBOOK
By the end of the second quarter, I will increase my level of involvement and initiative when performing service. I will document my progress in the back of my PSL notebook using Hart's Ladder of Participation. Note...ideally you will be able to demonstrate that you are moving up the rungs on the ladder. Your InnerView timesheets should also serve as supporting

STEP TWO: ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS IN THE BACK OF YOUR PSL NOTEBOOK IN 3 SEPARATE JOURNAL ENTRIES
- Journal #1: What level of Hart's Ladder best described your service during the first quarter? Support your answer with a description of the activities you performed, the purpose of these activities, and what, if any, input you had in the decision making process. (Due Friday, November 15th)
- Journal #2: What is the highest level of Hart's Ladder that you were able to reach while serving during the second quarter? Support your answer with a description of the activities you performed, the purpose of these activities, and what, if any, input you had in the decision making process. (Due Friday, November 22nd)
- Journal #3: What is the highest level of Hart's Ladder that you hope to reach while serving during the third quarter? 1st Quarter S.M.A.R.T. Goals (Select One)
- By the end of the first quarter, I will learn and use the names of 6 people that I serve and initiate conversations with them in order to find out what we have in common and learn something new about them. At the end of each week, I will document the name of one new person and relevant details in my PSL notebook.
- By the end of the first quarter, I will develop empathy by truly listening and being aware of the feelings of 6 people that I serve and record relevant details about them in my PSL notebook. I will use this information to better engage in conversation with them the next time I see them to show them I was present and listening.
- By the end of the first quarter, I will learn to listen actively to the people I serve and ask good questions to show interest in their lives. At the end of each week, I will identify who I interacted with in my PSL notebook, record the strategies I employed to show interest, document the questions I asked, and brainstorm new ways to ask follow-up questions.
- By the end of the first quarter, I will show strong cultural awareness towards the people I serve and determine how they like to be treated. At the end of each week, I will document their preferences as well as my own new understandings in my PSL notebook. My entries will demonstrate my ability to check my own assumptions about those who may seem different as well as considerations of other peoples' world views, frames of reference, and beliefs.
- By the end of the first quarter, I will improve my ability to reflect on my service experiences and deepen my understanding of others. At the end of each week, I will compose a reflection in my PSL notebook answering the questions: "What?" "So what?" and "Now what?" to demonstrate what I have learned from my service experience, why it is important, and what I can do to better serve the needs that exist in the community.
Example of an ADV response: This week I had the opportunity to work with a client named John. Initially John was very quiet and seemed reluctant to talk to me. Initially, we spoke very little and focused on the task at hand. Then I noticed that John was wearing a U2 tshirt. I told him that my favorite U2 song was "Desire." He was impressed that I was familiar with the band and told me about all of the U2 concerts he has been too. I also learned that John played guitar when he was in high school. When I told him that I played drums in the high school band he joked that we should start a band of our own. I hope to listen to some U2 songs before the next time I volunteer in hopes of striking up another conversation with John the next time that I visit.
Example of a NM response: I met John. We both like music.
