Lesson 5: God Bless the Child and Welfare
During this lesson, students view the movie God Bless the Child to gain insight into the struggles faced by adults and children caught in the cycle of poverty. Theresa Johnson and her daughter Hillary are fictional characters, yet their story is a very real experience for many homeless. Students will complete a viewing guide that prompts them to think deeply and reflect on the causes of poverty and homelessness while analyzing how individuals and organizations respond. The lesson concludes with a discussion on welfare reform.
