PSL Announces New Summer Program from June 23-27, 2014
Description: Perry Teens Leading Change (TLC) is a week long program for incoming 9th-11th graders focused on helping students connect their living with their learning. Each day will begin with a core seminar in the new Perry Service Learning Center for Civic Engagement designed to introduce students to the themes for the week: poverty, homelessness, the environment, people with special needs, elders, and philanthropy. Students will also engage in experiential learning by taking daily trips to serve organizations in Northeast Ohio that are working to meet the unmet needs that exist in our community. In the process, students will gain a deeper understanding of these complex issues while learning how individually and collectively people can make a difference through civic engagement. Students will engage in a variety of projects that educate others and/or create positive change.
Examples of possible service learning projects include:
- Sorting and packing food for people experiencing food insecurity at the Cleveland Foodbank
- Preparing and serving meals at 2100 Lakeside and the Salvation Army
- removing trash and debris during a coastal clean-up along the shores of Lake Erie
- weeding, watering, and harvesting vegetables for The Perry Center at the PHS Giving Garden
- providing typical peer support to students with special needs at New Avenues to Independence
- participating in recreational activities with elders at Emeritus of Mentor and local senior centers
- engaging in philanthropy by awarding a $250 grant to one of the organizations served during the week
At the conclusion of each day, the instructors will help participants to process their experiences through music, art, written, and oral reflections. An innovative feature of this program will be the incorporation of social media to serve as a tool for communicating and reflecting through posts, videos, and photography. Moreover, social media will also enable participants to educate others about what they have learned and create positive change.
The program’s focus on collective human concerns and needs will equip participants with leadership, initiative, creativity, empathy, and other skills that will enable them to be more informed and active citizens in their school and community.
