Lesson Three: Accomodations for people with special needs
In addition to developing a simulation that raises awareness about a physical, cognitive, neurological, or specific learning disability, your presentation should include information about the accomodations, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology available to people with special needs. This lesson is designed to help you recognize the potential barriers that people with special needs face and identify appropriate accomodations designed to provide access to major life activities. After hearing from a Perry Local Schools intervention specialist, you will amend your simulation proposal to include specifc accomodations, and visit an interactive website that affords you the opportunity to consider appropriate responses for a variety of learning disabilities.
The companion website for the PBS special titled "Misunderstood Minds" profiles a variety of learning problems and expert opinions. In addition to affording visitors the opportunity to experience various learning problems, the website also offers many specific strategies to accomodate these special needs. Click here to view the website and use the guided notes below to complete the section that addresses attention disorders.
